Open Monumentendag 2019 - Castle Heeswijk, the most beautiful in North Brabant

During #Open #Monumentendag in the #Netherlands– every second weekend of September – thousands of #historical #buildings and sites (about 4.000) are open to the public free of charge. Besides opening their doors, many locations also organize on-site activities like exhibitions, musical performances and guided tours. Each year around 80 to 85% of #Dutch municipalities participate in the Open Monumentendag, organized by local committees. In recent years around 900,000 visitors have participated annually, making the Open Monumentendag one of the Netherlands’ premier cultural events.

We seized this opportunity and decided to visit #KasteelHeeswijk in the province of North #Brabant. #Heeswijk castle is a #moated #castle, originally built in the 11th century and restored in 2005. When choosing what open #monument to go to, the phrase used to promote the castle definitely played a role and it's indeed a visitors' catch: "hét mooiste kasteel van Brabant". Plus, we read there were going to be musical performances and volunteers wearing costumes and dancing, aiming to reflect the life and traditions of the mid 19th century. Weather was great, the area is beautiful and green, castle is worth a visit: a reight nice Sunday.
